Year of creation - 1893, canvas and oil were used, size: 71 by 84 cm. Located in Theodosia Art Gallery. I.K. Aivazovsky, Theodosius, Crimea.

An interesting story is dedicated to the creation of this picture, written by the famous Soviet art critic L. A. Wagner. In 1892, Ilya Konstantinovich spent the winter in a small mansion in St. Petersburg and worked a lot with rapture, forgetting to eat. But Pantelei, the old janitor, tried to remind him of this. Over time, they became friends, discussed a lot of the defense of Sevastopol and other military events that the former servant found. It was he who gave the artist the idea to paint this picture.

Fledged by glory and selflessly defended by Russian soldiers, the strategic height forever went down in history during the Crimean War, and later the Great Patriotic War. However, from this point of view, the Malakhov Kurgan makes a somewhat different impression.

A stone cross, laid out of enemy nuclei, one of which brought death to a brilliant strategist, Admiral V. Kornilov at this very place in 1854. Two aged veterans came to honor him. They have come a long way and only in the evening got to the right place. One of them fell to his knees, the second stands, taking off his hat, and recalling past fights, where he once lost his right leg. Aivazovsky secretly took the prototype of this man from Pantelei. When the janitor recognized himself on the magnificent canvas presented at a major exhibition, he could not restrain his tears.

The painter with a brush caught the general atmosphere of light sadness and sadness, remember the severity lying on the shoulders of veterans. This is one of the few works where, in order to convey a plan, people are on the same level of importance as a common historical event or nature. The detailed foreground is replaced by an impressive panorama of Sevastopol and its seaport. Light, airy sky as if promises saddened people peace.
