Painted in oil on canvas in the years 1500-1501. (according to other versions, the interval is from 1500 to 1510), located horizontally, the size is 62 by 77.5 cm. It is located in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, Italy.

Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco (full name of the artist) is a famous representative of the Venetian school, which was one of the main in Italy during the Renaissance. He specialized in portraiture, carefully painting landscapes in the background. Unfortunately, he did not sign his works, and too little accurate information has remained from that time to find out the details of the creation or the names of the people painted here.

An allegorical group portrait shows the different ages of three men or, more likely due to external similarities, the maturation of one of them, the oldest. In his wrinkles and compressed lips in a solid line, in a look directly at the viewer, the past time and superiority over the other two halves is read with sadness and understanding of the inevitably approaching end. The old man seems to recall his past. The images of immature adolescence and maturity are resurrected in front of him, when the male mind and attractiveness are manifested in full force. A sheet of paper in the hands of a teenager is similar at the same time to a symbol of learning, knowledge acquired for a long time and useful for a long time, and to a list of actions that two “generations” are trying to realize. After all, the pointing finger, so clearly highlighted by light, in art is a strong sign that attracts attention in something special.

Black background and rich dark red create the mood of the picture. It makes you think, causes many associations. I would like to consider the faces skillfully drawn, softly glowing in the twilight and look for similarities between them.
