The painting “Prayer for the Chalice” was painted by a Russian artist of Italian origin F. A. Bruni in Rome for the church on the estate of Senator G. N. Rakhmanov. The basis of the picture lay religious motives. To make the color scheme more saturated and expressive, the author used oil paints.

The canvas stands out for its non-standard size, which may refer us to the high stained-glass windows of Christian churches. On it, Jesus Christ is kneeling before the holy cup. He already knows what suffering awaits him ahead and what painful execution he will undergo. A sorrowful face and palms submissively stacked on top of one another are lit with golden reflections, despite the dusk reigning around.

Clothing is painted in a pure scarlet color, which also distinguishes it from the surrounding darkness. Jesus is like a light in the darkness, the messiah, the last hope of a world mired in its own sins, and the author emphasizes this with numerous artistic tricks.

In turn, the cup, in contrast to the central figure of the picture, is depicted not so clearly. She is ghostly, giving subtle light. For Jesus, the only hope remains the realization of his destiny, which will help him accept both the difficult fate and the betrayal of one of the disciples.

In his painting, Bruni used many techniques of academic drawing and achieved a coherent, correctly constructed composition. The painting became so famous that several other great masters redrew it several times. A repetition of this work of art is still in the church of the Academy of Arts.
