V. Meyerhold is one of the geniuses of theatrical art. Being a reformer in his field, Vsevolod Emilievich could not accept the permutations in power circles that occurred between 1937 and 1938.
On January 7, 1938, the Arts Committee decided to close the State Theater that bears his name. An outstanding director could not ignore the fact of such arbitrariness, but could not do anything. In the end, careless statements become the cause of the arrest, and subsequently the death of Meyerhold.
Shortly before his arrest, P.P. Konchalovsky painted a portrait of Meinhold, depicting with the help of paints that which could not be expressed in words. The man in the picture froze in a pose that emphasizes the existence of a conflict between the person and the surrounding reality. Until the end, being confident in the validity of the judgments of his comrades in work, party activities, family members and just neighbors, he was not ready to take the stab in the back that fate had prepared for him. And yet he understands that this cannot be avoided.
Meyerhold is depicted in a reclining position. The support for his left hand is the surface of the sofa, covered with a colorful coverlet. The background for the picture was an ordinary Soviet apartment, because behind the model's back you can see a bright patterned carpet.
A bright carpet, no less bright coverlet and a peculiar relaxed pose create a deceptive impression.
To the inexperienced viewer it seems as if he is a dreamer in front of him, not burdened with any worries and not knowing about the vicissitudes of life. Only by looking closely, it is possible to understand that a person is detached from the surrounding reality, apathy and corruption are present in his gaze. The portrait created by Konchalovsky is the last image of the director. The painting is stored in the collection of paintings of the Tretyakov Gallery.
