The recognized master of portrait V. Serov in 1898 was entrusted to paint himself by a prominent composer - Rimsky-Korsakov. The artist has always with particular trepidation set to work. His models are not only well-known relatives and comrades, but also a large number of people are famous, mysterious, inaccessible far from the first meeting in an art studio.
Connoisseurs of Serov’s work recognized this feature of the gifted portrait painter: he painted on the canvas the true character of a person without embellishment. So sometimes it was scary to pose for the artist, because the portrait will give out all the hidden traits and excitement of the soul, the whole inner life.
Like readiness for confession, there was a decision to become a model for Valentin Serov's paintings. This magnificent property expresses its genius. Therefore, nevertheless, the number of people who want to get a picture of their own nature did not decrease.
"Portrait of Rimsky-Korsakov" is a medium-sized canvas, the technique of execution vaguely resembles the impressionist style. The color scheme is muted. The number of light areas on the canvas is four times less than the areas darkened, covered with chaotic rough strokes.
The dark brown color of the furniture, the dirty green shade of the wallpaper, the dark gray strict jacket on the figure of a man of respectable age sitting at the table ... And only voluminous stacks of sheets laid out on the table and the cabinet shine with white light.
Opposite the table, one can guess the presence of a window that was not included in the composition of the picture. Midday light lacks sunny yellow glare. The weather outside is rather cloudy and alarming. The composer is serious, thoughtful, focused on his work. With his left hand he holds an open manuscript, with his right he aimed to make additions to the work.
The posture of a slender man is straight, collected, a smart face inspired. The features of the figure and facial expressions describe the character of Rimsky-Korsakov - strong-willed, confident and hardworking.
