The picture "After the Thunderstorm" B. Kustodiev wrote in 1921. The time in Russia was difficult, the revolution and civil war exhausted the people. The picture reflects the beauty and harmony of peaceful life. It has harmony, tragedy, and hope.
The canvas shows the outskirts of a Russian village. Wooden houses are visible on the hill. Typical location of the settlement: on one side is a forest, and at the bottom is a river. Several storylines are intertwined in the picture. So in life, many events take place in parallel.
In the foreground, two men in Russian blouses are walking along the road. One points toward the creek where women bathe. It can be assumed that the men go for mushrooms, but the elegant shirts and an important hat for one of them says that the men went to the city or passed the village. A large stream flows from a wide river, where women bathe.
In the distance, you can make out naked female figures. This picture is very attractive to men. Cows are resting next to the women under the tree. They graze on a hot summer day and hide from the sun for lunch. Behind the modest wooden houses you can see the temple layout.
The artist conveys the spirituality of the Russian people. Even in a small village there is always a church. If you take a quick look at the picture, you may not immediately notice the main event of that hot day. One of the village houses is on fire. Black smoke swirls over the roof and can be seen at a great distance. Maybe a passing man in the foreground showed with his hand not a naked woman, but a burning house. A lot of people are running on fire. So the shepherd of cows hurries towards the burning house, and the family moves in a hurry through a wheat field.
A fire on such a hot day can spread throughout the village, so everyone wants to put out the flame. A rainbow is visible above the village as a symbol of hope that everything will be fine. The sky after the thunderstorm is clear and the dark clouds are gone, but it is the rain that is so necessary for the locals now. Perhaps the house caught fire from a lightning strike.
